How Parents Can Support GCSE Maths Without “Teaching” the Content

Many parents want to help but don’t feel confident teaching maths. The good news? You don’t need to teach anything.
Here’s how to support your child effectively without touching the maths itself.
1. Create a Supportive Environment
You can help by:
Providing a quiet study area
Setting a weekly routine
Checking their planner
Encouraging breaks
Reducing distractions
This prepares your child mentally for learning.
2. Ask the Right Questions
You don’t need to know the answer. Just ask:
“What step are you stuck on?”
“What do you think the question is asking?”
“Can you show me the method?”
“What do you know already?”
These build independent thinking.
3. Help Them Stay Organised
Support with:
Printing past papers
Keeping revision notes tidy
Managing their timetable
Tracking their progress
Organisation improves performance more than most parents realise.
4. Encourage a Healthy Mindset
Shift from “you need to know this” to:
“Let’s figure this out together.”
“It’s okay to make mistakes.”
“You’re improving.”
This builds resilience.
5. Bring in a Tutor When Needed
Once you see that your support isn’t enough — or if stress rises — a Tutor can take over the teaching while you focus on encouragement.
